A checklist for the first phone call

When a card looks right, ring or message the seller with four questions: how many owners, is the service book stamped, when was the last roadworthiness test, and why are they selling. Then propose a concrete time for a viewing. A clear answer to those four tells you most of what the ad does not.

If the seller is a dealer, also ask what warranty comes with the car and whether it has been inspected before sale.

Official history checks for French-registered cars

France has a free government service, Histovec, where the seller can generate a report on the car’s administrative history: previous owners, declared accidents and whether anything blocks the sale. Ask for that link before you travel. Then check that the registration certificate, the « carte grise », matches the seller’s ID and the car’s VIN.

For a car more than four years old, the seller has to provide a roadworthiness report, the « contrôle technique », less than six months old. Read the list of faults, not just the pass stamp.

Red flags in used car ads

A price far below similar cars, a seller who only writes and never calls, a car said to be abroad that can be shipped once you transfer a deposit: walk away. Pay when you get the keys and the papers, not before. A bank transfer to a stranger for a car you have not seen is the most common way people lose money here.
