A checklist for buying a used car privately in Italy

Ask the seller for the service book, the date of the last revisione and whether the car has had bodywork. At the viewing, check that the chassis number matches the registration document and that the person selling is the registered owner.

Agree the price and any known faults in writing, pay only once the transfer of ownership is under way, and never send a deposit to hold a car you have not seen. Buying from a dealer usually brings a warranty; a private sale usually does not, which is part of why it can be cheaper.
