A used-car checklist for Germany

Compare the VIN on the car with the one in the Fahrzeugbrief, the ownership document, and check that the name in it matches the seller’s ID. Drive the car from a cold start. If you are unsure, bring someone who knows cars or book a check at an independent garage.

Do not pay a deposit for a car you have not seen, and avoid any escrow or shipping service the seller suggests. Automobile clubs offer free written sale contracts.
