Paperwork worth checking before money changes hands

Ask when the next HU, the general inspection often just called TÜV, is due, and look through the Scheckheft and any invoices. The name in the Fahrzeugbrief, officially the registration certificate part II, should match the person selling, and its chassis number should match the one on the car.

Drive the car yourself, ideally from a cold start, and do it in daylight. Do not send a deposit for a car you have not seen in person, however convincing the story about a posting abroad sounds. Close with a written purchase contract; motoring clubs publish free templates.
