Why the first caller gets the test drive in Germany

A sensible car at a sensible price draws messages from private buyers, small traders and export buyers within hours. Sellers rarely work through the whole queue; they arrange a viewing with the first few people who sound serious and stop replying to the rest.

Being early is the whole game. A card in Telegram does not buy the car for you, but it moves the moment you learn about it forward, so you are among the people the seller actually calls back.

Reading an AutoScout24 card in five seconds

Photo first: is it the body shape and colour you can live with? Then the price against what you have seen this week. If both pass, tap the button and check the details that the card leaves out: first registration, mileage, the next HU (the German roadworthiness test), the number of previous owners.

If you like it, ring the number in the ad or send a message with a concrete time you can come. A specific offer to visit tends to get a faster answer than a question about the lowest price.

Dealer or private: decide on the site

AutoScout24 lets you filter by seller type. Dealers normally owe you statutory warranty on a used car; private sellers in Germany usually exclude it in the contract. Neither is wrong, but it changes how hard you inspect the car.

Run two separate searches instead of one mixed list. Each gets its own hashtag in the chat, so you know who you are dealing with before opening the ad. A search you only half care about can be muted: its cards arrive silently and wait for the evening.

Paperwork worth seeing at the viewing

Ask for the vehicle registration certificate part II, the Fahrzeugbrief, and check that the name fits the seller and the chassis number fits the car. Look through the service book and recent invoices. Drive it from a cold start. Do not wire a deposit for a car you have not seen, and treat any offer to ship it to you after payment with suspicion.

Do I need to speak German?

The cards show the ad’s own title and price. For the call or message to the seller, German helps, and some dealers will also reply in English.

Is every check guaranteed to reach the site?
