Is a multi-day auction really worth an alert?
Yes, and for a different reason than on classifieds. Nobody is going to buy the lot behind your back the hour it appears; the auction runs for days. What you gain is time: to read the expert description, to ask the seller about a crack or a replaced pickup, to compare with other sales, to talk to your teacher. Players who meet a lot on its last evening rarely get any of that.
Catawiki’s weekly instrument auctions add new lots regularly, and a card per matching lot means you see each one at the start.
Instrument families that suit separate searches
Guitars, bowed strings, keyboards and wind instruments attract different buyers and need different checks, so give each its own search. Each one gets its own hashtag in the chat; tap it to see that family’s history. Mute a broad search you only browse, and keep the instrument you really need audible.
Questions for the seller before you bid
For a guitar: is the finish original, are any parts replaced, has the neck been reset? For a violin: any cracks, and is the label original or attributed? For a synth: are all voices and keys working, and which voltage does it need? Ask through the lot page while the auction is young, so the answer comes in time.
The full price of an instrument from Catawiki
The winning bid plus Catawiki’s buyer’s fee plus shipping, which for a large instrument in a hard case is not small, plus any import charges if the seller is in another country. Look at the seller’s rating and set one maximum that covers it all.
