A checklist before you write to an Austrian seller
Is the item what the title says? Enlarge the photos on a big screen: perforations and cancellations on stamps, mint marks and edges on coins, dial, hands and movement on a watch, the base mark on porcelain. Is the provenance plausible? Ask where it came from and whether a receipt, certificate or old dealer label exists. Is the price in line? Compare with a catalogue and with what you have seen offered before.
If two of those three answers are good, write at once. Hesitating on a fair private offer is the usual way to lose it.
Why the inbox suits a slow, careful hobby
Collecting is rarely a race to the minute, but it is often a race to the day. A stamp album from an estate or a pocket watch from a flat clearance may be gone by the next evening. Reading your digest with breakfast and again after work catches nearly every new ad in good time, without a phone chiming through dinner.
Email also keeps photos at full size, which matters when the difference between a common and a scarce variety is a detail in the corner.
Your mail archive as a record of willhaben prices
File each search into its own folder with a mail rule. Over a season you build a searchable record of real asking prices in Austria: which years of Schilling silver turn up often, what a given watch brand fetches in honest condition, how often a pattern of Viennese porcelain appears. That record makes the next decision quick.
Fakes, restrikes and payment traps in collectibles
Restrikes, forged overprints and watches built from mixed parts all circulate. Treat bold claims without evidence as a prompt for questions, not a reason to hurry. Ask for extra photos of the reverse, the back or the movement.
Meet in person where you can and pay on the spot. When posting is unavoidable, agree on padded, insured shipping and use the route willhaben itself provides. Do not wire money to strangers who steer you towards a payment page outside willhaben.
Plans, addresses and the spam folder
Email is included on every plan, sent to one address on Free and Starter and up to three on Pro. Free checks one search every 30 minutes, Starter at $5.99 five searches every 10 minutes, Pro at $14.99 twenty searches at the fastest pace. Your provider decides what is spam: after the first match, check that folder, mark the mail as wanted and add the sender to your contacts. willhaben’s Suchagent can run alongside.
