A nursery checklist, worked through by inbox

What to inspect when you collect a Gitterbett or car seat

On a cot, count the screws, check the bars for cracks and make sure the base locks firmly at each height. Many families buy the mattress new. On a high chair, give it a firm shake and look at the straps.

Car seats need stricter rules. Ask whether the seat was ever in a vehicle during an accident and leave it if the answer is not a clear no. Find the label naming ECE R44 or R129 and the production date stamped into the shell. Pay in person after inspecting, never in advance to a stranger.
