Coffee, laptop, and three new iPhone 13 minis in one message

Picture a Tuesday morning at your desk in Hamburg. Your inbox is open anyway, and one of the mails is a short list: three iPhone 13 minis posted since the last check, each with a photo and a price. Two are ordinary, one is fifty euros below the rest and sits twenty minutes away by S-Bahn.

That is the moment to write, not after lunch. Open the ad from the mail, ask whether you can see it this evening, and say you will pay cash at the handover. Sellers tend to reply to the buyer who names a time.

What a month of these mails teaches you about prices

Because every mail carries prices, a filing rule turns your inbox into a price record for one model. Send them to an ‘iPhone’ folder and search it a few weeks in: you will know what a 13 mini with 128GB actually goes for around you, not what a price guide says.

That record also tells you which ads deserve suspicion. An offer far below everything else in the folder is a reason to slow down and ask questions.

Activation Lock and the other checks at a German handover

Meet somewhere public and hold the phone yourself. Ask the seller to sign out of iCloud, turn off Find My and erase the device in front of you; if the setup screen still wants a stranger’s Apple ID afterwards, walk away. Look at Settings › Battery for the battery health figure, and at Settings › General › About, where recent iOS versions flag a replaced or unknown display, battery or camera.

Proof of ownership is the Rechnung, the original receipt. Dial *#06#, compare the IMEI with the one on the receipt or box, and you know the paperwork belongs to this phone.

If the iPhone has to be posted

Shipping across Germany is common on Kleinanzeigen, but pay only through a method with buyer protection you know works, such as the platform’s own ‘Sicher bezahlen’ where an ad offers it. Avoid bank transfers and PayPal ‘Friends and Family’ to people you have never met.

Your inbox needs a second rule for this: a message that claims to be from Kleinanzeigen and asks you to pay through a link off the site is a scam pattern. Delete it rather than click it.
