Is your search too wide or too narrow?

A search for „vintage“ alone floods every mail with reproductions and modern furniture styled to look old. A search for one catalogue number may stay silent all year. The middle ground is one kind of object, the word sellers use for it, and a price ceiling you would actually pay.

For a rare piece, run two or three searches with spelling variants, accents or the maker’s name. Another on „lot“ or „collection“ within your category catches the boxes sold without a description, which is where surprises tend to be.

Comparing several finds in the same email

When a check brings four film cameras at once, you see them side by side. One asking half what the others want is either a seller who does not know, or a fault worth asking about. Start with that one.

Proof to ask for before the trip

Ask for the photos that answer the question: the title page and back of a comic album, the label and matrix of a record, the lens held against light and a shutter release for a camera, the mark under a ceramic piece. Ask where it came from.

Pay on handover or through a protected method, never a deposit to a stranger, and be wary of a seller who pushes you to decide. If the piece has to be posted, agree on tracked delivery and decent packing first; a record or a ceramic vase that arrives in a thin envelope is a loss, whatever it cost.

Letting the archive work for you
