The mistake: searching for „MacBook“ and nothing else

A bare brand search returns chargers, sleeves, broken screens and decade-old machines, and the one good Air gets lost in the list. After a few noisy mails, people stop opening them.

Put the parts you cannot change after buying into the query: chip, memory, storage, screen size. Run a second search for an equivalent Windows laptop rather than widening the first.

Locks, profiles and other deal-breakers

Ask the seller to show, in front of you, that Find My (Localiser) is off and the activation lock is gone. Check that the laptop is not enrolled in a company’s device management; a managed machine can lock you out again after a reinstall.

Then look at the battery cycle count, test every key, port, the webcam and the speakers, and ask for the facture to see how much warranty is left. Meet, test and only then pay. No deposit to someone you have never met.

A folder of digests becomes your price guide

Because each mail stays put, a few weeks of them tell you what a used M1 or M2 really sells for around you, boxed or not, with or without receipt. Search the folder before you reply to an ad and you will know whether to move fast or let it go.

That record is also handy for freelancers who need to justify a purchase or compare two configurations.

First match: check where the mail landed

Whether a new sender reaches your inbox is your provider’s call. When the first digest is due, check the spam folder too, mark it as not spam and add the sender to your contacts.
