Spotting a stolen bike before you pay

Bike theft is a real problem in France, and some stolen frames end up on classifieds. Ask the seller for the original facture and for the anti-theft marking number engraved on the frame, the Bicycode-style gravage, and check that the paperwork matches the bike in front of you.

Meet face to face, preferably at the seller’s home, take it for a ride, inspect brakes, drivetrain and wheels, and only pay after that. Sending money upfront to a stranger is never part of a good deal.
