Checklist for a second-hand machine in France

Voltage first: a three-phase saw will not run on a household socket. Then power, age and what comes with it, such as blades, fences, chargers and batteries. On the day, start the machine and let it run for a few minutes; if the seller cannot show it working, think twice.

Look at the serial plate and ask where the machine came from or for the receipt. Pay on collection and never send a deposit for kit you have not seen.

Measure before you drive out. Ask the seller for the footprint and weight, and whether the machine comes apart for transport. A planer that needs four people to lift is not a bargain if you arrive alone with a hatchback.

Big kit needs a plan, and email gives you one

You do not buy a concrete mixer on impulse. You need a trailer, a free afternoon and maybe a friend to lift. Email suits that: you read the alert in the evening, compare it with others in the same mail, and check it fits through the workshop door.
