The e-bike mistake: buying range you will not get

On an electric bike or scooter, the battery is most of the price, and it is the part a photo tells you least about. Before you travel, reply to the seller asking for the number of charge cycles, today's real range compared with new, and whether the original charger and battery key come with it.

At the viewing, turn the display on and look for error codes, then ride a short loop and check that the motor assist arrives smoothly and does not cut out. A missing charger is a cost you can fairly bring into the price.

Why a work inbox suits a spring bike hunt

From April onwards, bikes that spent winter in storage come up for sale and many new riders look at the same pages. Fair-priced, well-kept bikes tend to go to whoever writes first. If your day is spent at a desk, email lands where you already are: no app on a locked-down work laptop, no phone in a meeting.

Frame size in the keyword, scooters in a search of their own

Paperwork, cracks and a worn drivetrain

Ask for an invoice or other proof of ownership and match the frame number, usually under the bottom bracket, to it. A filed-off number or a fresh respray without documents is a pass. Look at the welds, the head tube and the bottom bracket area for hairline cracks, check chain stretch and the chainring and cassette teeth, and shift through every gear on a test ride.
