A checklist for the laptop you are after

Before you save the link, write down five things: the models you accept, the minimum RAM and storage, the screen size, the price you would pay in rupiah, and the area where you can meet. Put the model and price into the OLX search, keep the rest for reading the mails. A clear list stops you from chasing every shiny ad.

Office laptops sold off in batches by companies, a designer’s MacBook Pro, a gamer moving to a desktop: each shows up under different words. If your list allows two or three families, give each one its own search so the mails stay readable.

Specs, side by side, in your inbox

Laptop ads differ in small details that matter: 8 or 16 GB of memory, a battery replaced last year, a keyboard in English or local layout. In a mail you can open two ads in tabs, compare, and decide which seller to write to first. Keep the mails in a folder and after a couple of weeks you know what a MacBook Air M1 or a ThinkPad really sells for in your city.

When a mail shows the right machine at the right price, reply soon: good laptops do not sit on OLX for long.

Inspecting a MacBook or Windows laptop at the meeting

Choose a café or mall with a power socket. On a MacBook, confirm the seller has signed out of the Apple ID so Activation Lock is off, and that no remote management screen appears. Check battery cycles, every key, the trackpad, ports, speakers and webcam. On a Windows laptop, look for a BIOS password, a genuine licence and fan noise under load.

A request to transfer money to „book“ the laptop, or to pay through a link sent in a chat, is a reason to walk away.
