A site office in Surat at 9 am

The supervisor opens the laptop and finds one mail from the night’s checks: two scaffolding lots, a concrete mixer and a used grinder, all within the budget. He forwards it to the owner, they agree on the mixer, and he calls the seller before the other contractors are awake.

Equipment purchases are often shared decisions between a buyer, a supervisor and whoever pays. An email is easy to pass along, and the reply sits with the ads it is about.

Keeping a record of used equipment prices in your inbox

Create a folder or a label for each machine type. After a few weeks, searching for a brand shows what similar lathes or compressors were listed for locally, which gives you a firm basis when you negotiate.

The same folder later serves as a note of where a machine came from and when you contacted the seller.

What to ask before buying heavy equipment second-hand

Ask for the original invoice, the hours or years of use and whether it has been rewound or rebuilt. Run it under load at the seller’s place, check guards and switches, and look for cracked castings or weld repairs. For scaffolding, count the pieces and check for bends and rust.

Pay once you have seen and tested the equipment. Treat requests for an advance before inspection with suspicion, and never scan a QR code that is said to send you money.
