An old house being cleared in north Kolkata

The grandchildren are selling the family home and post a carved chair, a brass lamp, a box of old coins and a valve radio in one afternoon. They price by guesswork, and some pieces are listed for far less than a collector would pay. The person who sees the ad first and turns up with cash usually leaves with the best of it.

That is the pattern in collectibles on OLX India: underpriced finds are rare and they are gone quickly, while overpriced ones stay up for weeks.

Telling a genuine old piece from a reproduction

Reproduction brass, artificially aged wood and copied coins are sold everywhere. Ask for close photos of marks, joints and the underside, and look at the piece in natural light. For coins, compare weight and edge with a reference catalogue; for cameras and radios, ask whether they work and try them.

Be wary of offers of rare coins at astonishing prices, of sellers who want a registration fee or a certificate fee before showing the item, and of any QR code sent to you to receive money.

Wording a collectible search that catches the right ads

Sellers rarely know the technical name. A gramophone may be listed as an old music player, an almirah as a wardrobe, a coin lot as old paisa. Try two or three wordings as separate searches, or one broader word with a price ceiling to keep the noise down.
