A family is selling the 2018 Swift their son drove to college: one owner, full service history, priced slightly under the market. They post it after breakfast. By eleven the father has taken a dozen calls and promised a viewing to the first two people who rang.

Those two did not refresh OLX all morning. They had a search that told them, and they called while the others were still scrolling.

Shaping a car search that is neither too wide nor too narrow

Start with one model and two or three model years, a kilometre ceiling and a budget with a little room above your target, because sellers often price to negotiate. Add a second search for the close alternative, a Baleno next to the i20, rather than one search that holds everything.

If cards come every hour, narrow the budget or the year. If a week goes by in silence, widen the city radius or drop the transmission filter.

Paperwork to see before you pay

Ask for the RC, insurance and PUC certificate, and check that the name on the RC matches the seller. Match the chassis number on the car with the RC, take it to your own mechanic, and confirm whether a loan is still open on it.

Be careful with a seller who says they are transferred out of town and will send the car once you pay transport charges. Pay only after the RC transfer form is signed and you hold the keys.
