Empty German kitchens and why appliances go fast

Many German rentals are let without a fitted kitchen, and tenants moving out sell their appliances rather than haul them. That means a steady flow of washers and fridges on Kleinanzeigen, but also lots of newcomers, students and families chasing the same ones. A known brand at a fair price usually collects several messages soon after it goes up.

A few German words that make the search work

„Einbau“ or „vollintegriert“ means built-in, „freistehend“ means freestanding, „unterbaufähig“ fits under a counter. „Abholung“ is pickup, „nur Abholung“ means no delivery. „Defekt“ marks a broken unit sold for parts, which you probably want to leave out of your main search.

Measure your kitchen gap first. A 45 cm dishwasher will not fill a 60 cm space neatly, and a tall fridge may not fit under a cabinet.

Test it running, then pay

Ask for a photo of the rating plate to learn the model and year. At the pickup, spin a washing machine drum by hand and listen for grinding, check the rubber door seal for mould, and ideally see it run a short cycle. A fridge should start up and get cold.

Pay in person once you have seen it working. Avoid sending money in advance to a stranger, especially for a deal that looks too cheap, and be careful with anyone who wants to move the chat off the platform straight away.
