Air conditioners in June, heaters in November

Appliance demand in Bulgaria follows the weather. Used air conditioners are wanted the moment the first hot week arrives, and fair ones vanish; oil heaters and convectors move when the nights get cold. Start the seasonal search a few weeks before everyone else does and you see more ads with fewer people chasing them.

Washing machines and fridges are steady all year, fed by people moving flats, renovating kitchens or leaving the country.

Five checks on a second-hand appliance

One: ask to see it running, a short wash, a cold fridge, a dishwasher cycle. Two: write down the model number and look up its common faults. Three: check seals, drums and hoses for mould, rust or cracks. Four: ask the age and whether it was ever repaired. Five: for an air conditioner, factor in installation by a technician, which a cheap unit does not include.

Pay when you collect. A seller who wants a prepayment through a link in a chat app, or a stranger asking for card details, is a reason to stop.

Why the first caller gets the cheap fridge

A family upgrading the kitchen needs the old fridge out before the new one is delivered. They pick the first person who can collect today and stop answering the rest. Seeing the ad soon after it goes up, rather than in the evening, puts you at the front of that queue.

Have your answer ready before you reply: when you can come, whether you have a car big enough, and whether you will carry it down the stairs yourself. A seller choosing between five messages takes the one that sounds like the fridge will be gone by evening. Bring a strap and a helper; a fridge should travel upright and rest for a few hours before you switch it on.

Telegram tricks for an appliance hunt

Run the washer and the dishwasher as two searches; their hashtags keep them apart in one chat. Forward a card to whoever shares the flat to agree on a price, mute the search that is not urgent, and open the same chat on your laptop to compare model numbers.
