Collecting is partly research. After a few months your mail holds every vintage radio or old note that sellers in your search posted, with photos and asking prices. Search the inbox for a maker’s name and you see how often it appears and what people ask, which helps when you meet a seller who names a figure.

Create labels or folders per theme and file the mails as they arrive; the archive grows on its own.

Read daily, but call quickly on the right piece

Email is calm, and that suits most of collecting. But the underpriced item from a house clearance in Lahore still goes to whoever contacts the seller first. When a mail shows the piece you have been after, call or message the same day, and keep a short question ready about condition and origin.

Getting collector mails past the filter

Spam filters are your provider’s, not ours. Once the first match arrives, look in spam and promotions, mark the email as not spam and save the sender as a contact. Do the same if you add a second address on Pro.

Questions to ask about provenance

Where did the item come from, how long has the family had it, has it been repaired or polished? Ask for close photos of marks, signatures, mint years or serial numbers. Replicas are common for coins, brassware and old watches, so compare with references.

See the piece before paying, meet in a safe public place or at a shop, and do not send an advance to a seller you have not met.
