Do you only hear about a rare piece once it is sold?

That is the common story among collectors who browse Divar when they have time. A record collection from a closed shop, a box of 1970s postcards, a working Grundig radio: these appear without warning and are priced by people who are not collectors. By the time you scroll back to the category, a dealer has already arranged a pickup.

Prices for vintage items are hard to judge because nothing is standard. Questions to ask before buying an old object

Ask where the item comes from, whether anything has been restored, and for clear photos of maker’s marks, stamps or signatures. Meet in a public place or at the seller’s home with someone you trust, hold the item before you pay, and decline any request to send money in advance to keep it for you.

Bear in mind that some antiquities have legal limits on sale; when an object looks archaeological, it is wise to leave it alone.
