Brand-only searches: the usual camera-hunting mistake

Type „Canon“ on OLX.kz and you get printers, ink, compact cameras from 2010 and a few good bodies buried among them. An email full of that gets ignored, and the one ad that mattered goes unread.

Name the system and the item instead: Sony E-mount, an a7 III, a 35mm prime. Add a minimum price above the cost of a strap. If you shoot weddings in Almaty and also want a cheap backup body, make those two searches, not one.

Comparing camera prices across Kazakhstan by email

Emails pile up into a record. After two weeks, search your folder for „a6400“ or „RF 50“ and you see the real asking range in tenge across cities. You also learn which sellers relist the same lens every few days at the same price, and which ads are new.

When a lens lands below the range, you notice at once, because you have been reading the range all along.

Inspecting a lens or body before money changes hands

Shine a phone torch through the lens to spot haze or fungus, rotate the zoom and focus rings, mount it on your own body and shoot at the widest aperture. For a body, take a test shot to read the shutter count, look at the sensor and test every button and card slot.

Pay once you are satisfied, face to face. An expensive lens shipped from another city against a Kaspi prepayment, at a price that seems too kind, is better skipped. Keep messages inside OLX where you can.
