A slow, careful instrument hunt suits an inbox

Buying a first piano or violin is a decision, not a reflex. An email per check gathers the new ads so you can read them calmly, look up the models, and ask the teacher before you call. Nothing gets lost between family messages.

Because the mail arrives after every check that found something, you still call the seller on the day the ad went up.

Sizes, keys and models worth naming in the search

Children’s violins and guitars come in fractional sizes, 1/2, 3/4 and full, and a digital piano for lessons should have 88 weighted keys. Put those in the query, with a price floor that keeps strings, stands and cases out. Folk instruments such as the dombra have their own makers; name them if you have a preference.

One instrument per search keeps every email short. Several family members learning different instruments can each have their own search.

Acoustic pianos are a special case: they are often given away cheaply by families who are moving, but the tuning and transport can cost more than the piano. A digital piano is easier to judge from an ad, and its model name tells you most of what you need to know.

Questions to ask a seller about a used instrument

Ask how old it is, where it was kept, and whether it has been repaired. Try it, or bring someone who plays: listen for buzzing strings, sticky keys, a warped neck or a cracked top. For a digital piano, check all keys, the pedal and the headphone socket.

Agree transport for anything heavy before paying, and pay after you have heard it. A prepayment by Kaspi transfer for a piano delivered from another city at a surprising price is best declined.
