Go to real estate, choose apartments for rent and the city, then the neighbourhoods you would consider, such as Kapana or Trakia in Plovdiv or Chayka and Levski in Varna. Add rooms, the highest monthly rent and furnished if offered. Sort by newest, then copy the page address.

Are you planning a move from another city or country?

Then you probably cannot walk past flats yourself, and you rely on ads. The trouble is timing: the best ones are gone before you have finished comparing. Email keeps a complete list of every new flat from your search, which you can work through at lunch, forward to a friend who lives locally, or keep for the trip when you book a few viewings in one afternoon.

An inbox folder as your shortlist of Bulgarian flats

A quiet inbox for a few days is normal in a narrow search; it means no new flat matched, not that something broke.

Before you hand over a deposit in Bulgaria

Do not pay to reserve a flat you have not seen, in person or by a live video call with someone you have checked. Ask who owns the flat and see proof. Get a written contract listing the rent, deposit, notice period and utilities, and photograph the meter readings and the flat’s condition when you move in.

Rents far below the area’s usual level, pressure to decide today, or a request to pay through a link are reasons to walk away.
