Planning a whole flat from Odesa listings, one email at a time

Imagine signing a lease on an unfurnished two-room flat in Odesa with a month before you move in. You need a bed, a wardrobe, a table and something to sit on, and the budget is small. Checking OLX every evening for each of those soon becomes a chore.

Run one search per piece instead and let each one email you. The mails pile up with photos and prices side by side, and you answer the promising ones first. Being early still pays off: a solid-wood table or a clean corner sofa at a fair price usually goes to the person who proposes a pickup time before anyone else.

A measuring list to keep next to your inbox

Write down the numbers that decide whether a piece fits: the wall for the sofa, the recess for the wardrobe, ceiling height, the width of the front door, the lift and any tight turn on the stairs. With them in a note, you can rule a listing in or out while still reading the email.

When you write to a seller, ask for width, depth and height, and for corner sofas, which side the corner sits on. A quick question now saves an evening spent travelling to a wardrobe that will never stand in your room.

Wardrobes and beds come apart: plan the pickup

Furniture rarely travels by courier, so think local. A cargo taxi is the usual way to bring it home; save a number and check the price to your district before you agree a time. If you live high up without a lift, ask whether loaders come with the van.

Large pieces usually need dismantling. Ask the seller whether they will do it, photograph the piece before it comes apart, and keep screws and fittings together in a labelled bag. Bring Allen keys and a screwdriver of your own.

Red flags on upholstered pieces and cabinets

Inspect sofas and mattresses in good light. Look along seams and under cushions; small dark spots can mean bedbugs, which is a firm reason to say no. Musty, smoky or pet smells seldom go away. Fully unfold any sleeper mechanism.

With cabinets and tables, test every drawer and door, push the frame to feel for wobbly joints and check the bottom edges for swollen chipboard. If the piece looks clearly worse than the listing photos, decline politely. Do not send money for furniture you have not seen.
