Your inbox as a price diary for one lens

Glass holds its value, but asking prices on OLX.ua still swing with condition and with how urgently the seller needs the money. File every alert into one folder and after a few weeks you have a real sense of what a used 70-200 or a fast 35mm goes for in Ukraine, without guessing.

Search the folder for the model name, compare the prices you were offered, and when a mail shows one clearly below that range you know to reply straight away.

Body only, kit bundle or a whole bag

The same camera appears in three shapes: body only, a kit with a standard zoom, and a full set with extra batteries, a grip and a bag. Comparing them needs care, because the kit lens alone can be a large part of the price. Decide which shape you want and phrase the search for it, or run two searches and let the mails show both.

If you already own lenses, a body-only search keeps the results tight. If you are starting out, a kit listing from someone moving to another system can be the cheapest way in.

Dust on the sensor versus damage to it

Ask for a shot of a plain light wall at a small aperture. Dark soft spots are dust and come off with a clean. Sharp lines or marks that stay after cleaning point to a scratched sensor or filter stack, which is an expensive fix. A photo of the sensor with the lens off, taken under a lamp, helps too.

The shutter count is the other number to ask for. Many bodies show it in a service menu or the file data, and it tells you how much of the shutter’s working life is left.

Paperwork, a torch and a parcel inspection

A box and receipt with a serial number that matches the camera support the seller’s ownership. For a lens, ask for a torch-through photo to rule out fungus threads or haze. When the deal is with Kyiv or Kharkiv and you are elsewhere, use Nova Poshta cash on delivery with inspection, test autofocus and a few frames at the branch, and decline a parcel that fails. Full prepayment without inspection is the case to avoid.
