What to test before carrying a washer down four floors

Ask to see it running. A fridge should be cold, a washing machine should get through a short programme, an oven should heat. Ask its age, whether it has been repaired, and whether a receipt or warranty remains. Look up the model number first so you know its energy use and what it cost new.

Washing machines should travel with their drum transit bolts fitted, so ask whether the seller still has them. Never pay a deposit before seeing the appliance, and treat payment links sent by strangers in a chat as a warning sign.
