A newcomer’s checklist for renting in a Romanian city

Decide three things before you copy the link: the most you will pay including utilities, which areas you can live with given your commute, and whether you will deal with agencies. Then prepare a short message in Romanian or English that says who you are, when you want to move and how long you plan to stay. Landlords answer the clear, polite ones first.

Keep a copy of your ID, a work contract or university letter and a rough budget on your phone. When the right card appears, you want to be ready to book a viewing that same day.

A well-priced flat near the centre or Mărăști gets a pile of messages within hours, and many owners simply stop answering once they have enough viewers lined up. Owner listings, agency listings and the commission question

Agencies post a lot on OLX, sometimes the same flat from several offices, and may charge a commission. If you want owners only, set the private-seller filter before you save the search. Paperwork and red flags before you hand over money

Never pay a deposit for a flat you have not seen. A landlord who is abroad and will post the keys once you transfer money is a classic trap. Ask to see the ownership document and check that the name matches the person you meet.
