Haze, fungus and the torch test on used glass

Lenses age inside. Stored in a damp cupboard, a lens can grow fungus that looks like fine spider threads between the elements, or develop a milky haze that softens contrast. Neither shows on a casual product photo, so ask the seller for a picture taken while shining a phone torch through the barrel from the back.

A few specks of dust inside an older lens are normal and rarely visible in images. Fungus is different: it can spread and cleaning means taking the lens apart. Price it as a repair, or walk away.

Box, receipt and a matching serial number

A camera has a serial number on the body, usually printed on the box as well. When the seller still has both, plus a receipt or warranty card, that is reasonable evidence the item is theirs to sell. Missing paperwork is not proof of anything wrong, as many people throw boxes away, but a seller who cannot explain where the camera came from deserves extra questions.

Ask for the shutter count too. Many bodies report it in a service menu or in the image file data, and a photo of the screen costs the seller ten seconds.
