A common mistake: searching „music“ for all of Pakistan

A search for every instrument in every city returns speakers, DJ controllers, toy pianos and phone covers with music notes. You stop reading the cards within a day. Pick the instrument and the city you can actually travel to; a Lahore guitar is not much use to a buyer in Peshawar unless the seller ships, and many do not.

If you play several instruments, make several searches. Each card then means something.

Who is calling the seller before you

Music students at the start of term, wedding musicians replacing a dholak, church and qawwali groups looking for a second harmonium, and small shops that buy to resell. When a Roland or Casio keyboard in good shape is posted at a fair price in Karachi, several of them message within hours. The Telegram card puts you among the first to see it.

Playing it before paying: guitar, keyboard, harmonium

For guitars, look along the neck for a bow, check the action, the frets and any cracks in the top. For keyboards, press every key, try every button and bring headphones to test the output. For a harmonium, play each reed and listen for leaks in the bellows. For tabla, check the skins and the straps.

Ask the seller to let you play it, meet where it is safe, and do not pay in advance to a seller you cannot visit. A brand-name instrument far below the usual price deserves extra caution.

Forward the card to your teacher

Not sure whether a guitar is a good buy? Forward the card to your teacher or a friend who plays and ask. Telegram keeps the photo and the link together, and the chat is on your phone and your computer. A browse-only search can be muted so it arrives silently.
