Buying a first piano or violin for a child

Parents rarely want to spend shop prices on an instrument a child might drop after a year, and many families in Jakarta and Surabaya sell the digital piano or violin their child outgrew. The trouble is finding the right size and the right price at the same time.

A search for the exact thing, say a 3/4 violin or an 88-key digital piano under a price you set, and an email per check means you see each new match without trawling OLX.

How to judge a used instrument before paying

Play it, or bring someone who can. On a piano, every key should sound and return evenly, and pedals should work. On a violin, look for cracks near the f-holes and check the bridge and pegs. On wind instruments, ask about dents and pads. On amps and keyboards, listen for crackle when you turn the knobs, which can mean corrosion from humid storage.

Pay after the test. If shipping is involved, prefer a joint-account service to a direct transfer, and walk away from anyone asking for money through a link outside OLX.
