Frame size first, then everything else

A bargain in the wrong size is not a bargain. Work out your size before you search, from your height or from a bike you already ride, and write it into the query the way Polish sellers do: a letter like M or L for mountain and city bikes, a number in centimetres for road and gravel frames, sometimes a wheel size such as 29 as well.

Too narrow and you miss ads that never mention size; too broad and the chat fills with kids’ bikes. Start with the type, model family and price ceiling, then tighten only if the cards are mostly noise.

Checking an e-bike’s battery before you hand over złoty

On an electric bike the battery is the costly wear part. Ask how old it is, how far it really goes on a charge, and whether the display can show the charge cycles. Make sure the charger and the battery key come with it. A test ride up a hill tells you more than any description; listen for grinding from the motor.

An invoice helps with any later service on the motor system, and it also answers the question of where the bike came from.

Bikes go missing; ads sometimes follow

Ask for the frame number, usually stamped under the bottom bracket, and make sure it has not been filed off. A seller who does not know the size or the bike’s history, or who wants to meet on a random corner, is a reason to slow down.

On the frame itself, look at the welds and the underside of the down tube for cracks, check the headset for play, measure chain wear and squeeze both brakes.
