Relocating from another island: renting before you arrive

A transfer from Surabaya to Jakarta, a new campus in Yogyakarta, a contract in Bali: the hardest part is finding a place while you are still somewhere else. You cannot drop in on viewings, so you need to see each new rental early, shortlist it and get someone to look at it for you.

Email works well here. The matches arrive in a place you already check, you forward the promising ones to a friend in the city, and they visit before you commit to anything.

Your inbox as a rent comparison by district

Ask your friend on the ground to check the water pressure, the mobile signal and the route to your office at rush hour, things no listing photo shows.
