Why a fairly priced family car rarely lasts a day in Ukraine

Private sellers on OLX tend to price a car at what they think it is worth and then sell to the first person who turns up with cash and a mechanic. A hatchback a little under the usual price draws families, taxi drivers and people who fix cars up for resale, all reading the same feed.

So the race is about who sees the ad first, not who negotiates best. A Telegram card moves that moment from a browser tab you forget to reload into a chat you check all day. How often your search is looked at depends on the plan: Free gives one search every 30 minutes, Starter ($5.99) five searches every 10 minutes, Pro ($14.99) twenty searches with the fastest checks.

Owner or dealer lot: picking the seller filter on OLX

The Приватна особа / Бізнес switch changes the feed more than any other filter. Dealer ads often come with a warranty and paperwork done on site, but the margin is built into the price. Owners are more likely to let a car go cheaply to be done with it. If you are unsure, add the search twice, one per seller type, and mute the dealer copy.

One chat, a Kyiv search and a Lviv search

A single all-Ukraine search for any car under a budget floods the chat with listings you will never visit. A model or two, a realistic year range and the oblast you can reach in an evening work far better. Put the price ceiling a bit above your real budget; most sellers expect to haggle.

If you would happily take a train to Lviv or Kharkiv for the right car, give that city its own search. Tapping its hashtag filters the chat down to those cards, and you can forward one to a mechanic friend before you buy a ticket.

VIN, registration papers and an independent garage

Before you travel, ask the seller for the VIN and look the car up in the public MVS vehicle check: registrations, number of owners, restrictions. At the viewing, match the VIN stamped on the body with the one in the registration certificate (техпаспорт), and the owner’s name on it with the seller’s ID.

Then take the car to a СТО you choose yourself, not one the seller recommends: a lift, a diagnostic scan and a paint-depth gauge over the body. A seller who will not drive to an inspection has told you what you need to know.

Pay at the MVS service centre, never a deposit up front

A request to wire a deposit to hold the car until you arrive is a familiar pattern on car listings. Send nothing before you have seen the car in person. The calm way to hand over money is at the re-registration at the MVS service centre, once the documents have been checked there and the contract is signed.
