When the fridge quits on a Sunday in Kyiv

Appliances rarely fail at a convenient moment. The fridge goes quiet on a weekend, the food goes into a neighbour’s freezer, and a new model is more than the budget allows this month. A used one from a nearby district is the obvious answer, and the people who answer a sensible offer first are the ones who drive away with it.

Reading the rating plate before you pay

Every washer, fridge and dishwasher carries a plate with the model and serial number. Ask the seller for a photo of it in your first message; the serial often encodes the production year, and the model tells you which spare parts and manuals exist.

The energy label matters too. A class that looked fine a decade ago can mean a noticeably higher electricity bill, which eats into a bargain over a couple of years. Ask whether the receipt and warranty card survive; a few months of manufacturer warranty left is worth paying a little more for.

See the machine actually running

For a washer, ask for a short programme with a spin. Listen for rumbling bearings, watch for drips under the door and check the rubber seal for mould and cracks. A fridge needs hours to reach temperature, so ask the seller to switch it on well before you arrive and check that both compartments are cold.

With an oven, try each mode and the fan; with a dishwasher, open the filter and look for scale. Power banks and inverters, popular for power cuts, should be charged in front of you and run a real load for a few minutes.
