Who wins a fairly priced hardtail in May

In Kyiv, Lviv or Dnipro the bike season starts the moment the weather turns, and so does selling. Someone lists a well-kept 29er at a sensible price on a weekday evening; a handful of people message; the seller picks whoever named a time to come and look. The rest get a polite „already sold“.

That race is not about bargaining skill. It is about being among the first to see the ad, which is what a Telegram card in a chat you already open dozens of times a day gives you.

Judging a bike from the card photo

One photo says a lot about a bicycle: whether the fork is a basic coil unit or an air fork, whether the drivetrain looks cared for, whether the „e-bike“ in the title is a factory model or a hub-motor conversion. You decide in the chat whether the ad deserves a tap.

The card also forwards cleanly. If you are unsure about a groupset or a motor brand, send it to a friend who rides, and ask before you message the seller.

Run them separately; each one carries its own hashtag, so tapping it shows only that hunt’s cards. A wide all-Ukraine search can be muted, so its cards arrive silently while your local one still makes a sound.

Frame number, crack check and battery questions

Stolen bikes turn up on every classifieds site. Ask for the purchase receipt or warranty card and compare the frame number, usually stamped under the bottom bracket, with the paperwork. A freshly resprayed frame or a filed-off number is reason enough to walk away.

At the meeting, look for cracks around welds and the head tube, check chain stretch, cassette and chainring teeth, and squeeze the brakes. On an e-bike ask the battery’s capacity in watt-hours, its age and charge cycles, and whether the original charger comes with it, then ride it with the assist on. If the bike travels boxed by Nova Poshta, agree on inspection at the branch with payment on receipt; full prepayment with no inspection is a reason to stop.
