A checklist to run before writing to any seller

Does the mount match your camera, or an adapter you already own? For a body, what is the shutter count, and do frames at f/16 against a clear sky show dust spots? For a long lens, does a torch shone through the glass reveal haze or fungus, does the zoom ring turn evenly, does stabilisation still work, and is the tripod foot firm?

Last: is the Rechnung still around, and the original box? Together they make the lens's history easier to follow.

Long lenses are what stand between you and a sharp chamois on a ridge in the Hohe Tauern, and buying one new is a serious expense. When a 100-400 or a 200-600 shows up at a fair price, messages pile up quickly, and sellers usually reply to whoever asked a real question first.

One search per focal range, not one for all of photography

A query like „Teleobjektiv“ drags in binoculars, spotting scopes and cheap converters. Run two or three narrow searches instead, focal length plus system, one spelled with „mm“ and one without. If you shoot Sony E and are happy to adapt, add a separate search for Canon EF glass.

Landscape shooters can do the same at the wide end, for a 16-35 or a fast 14 mm prime for night skies over the Dachstein. Separate hashtags keep each hunt readable in one chat.

Meeting a seller in Salzburg or Vienna

Collect in person whenever you can. Bring your own body, focus on something close and something distant, and watch whether autofocus settles without hunting. Money changes hands after that test, and never in advance to a stranger.
