Who rents first in Sarajevo?

Students arriving in autumn, people moving for work, families looking for one more room: the same well-priced two-room flats near a tram line in Novo Sarajevo or Centar attract all of them. Landlords tend to show the flat to the first few callers and let it to the first one who is ready. Refreshing OLX between lectures or meetings rarely gets you there.

A Telegram card shows the photo and the rent, so you can decide in a glance and ring while the ad is still fresh.

Splitting the hunt by neighbourhood

Rather than one search for the whole city, run one per area you would really live in, for example Ilidža and Novi Grad as one, Centar as another. Each gets its own hashtag in the chat. Mute the one that is a fallback, and forward a promising card to whoever you are moving with before you call. Telegram Desktop shows the same chat for checking the map on a bigger screen.

Deposits, contracts and the classic rental trick

The scam to watch for is a landlord who cannot show you the flat, often because they are said to be abroad, and asks for a deposit or the first month to „hold“ it. Do not pay before seeing the flat and meeting the person who has the right to let it. Agree in writing on the rent, the deposit, who pays utilities and how the deposit is returned, and note the meter readings on moving day.

If an agency is involved, ask about its fee before the viewing. Have your documents and the deposit ready before you go, so you can say yes on the spot if the flat is right; landlords often choose whoever can commit first.
